Victor S. Navasky Internship Program

Graduating Seniors Only

Editorial Internship

Publishing Internship

The Victor S. Navasky Internship is named for former editor,  publisher, and publisher emeritus Victor S. Navasky, who founded the  program in 1978, and for whom it was re-named in 2013. Over the course  of four decades, the Internship Program has expanded the platform for  diverse voices and perspectives by playing an essential role in  providing opportunities for mentorship, training, networking, and  publishing for the next generation of journalists.

Editorial interns learn the demands of deadlines, and are taught to  find their own voices, to navigate the difficult ethics questions about  source confidentiality, and to master the old-fashioned and rigorous process of fact-checking. Interns are also encouraged to pitch and write  their own articles for the magazine. It is a true boot camp for an  emerging generation of independent journalists. Focused on building  fundamental skills through comprehensive immersion, editorial interns at  The Nation learn to rebut, to combat, to redress, and to challenge. Practical experience is complemented by educational seminars with  exceptional writers, academics, and activists, such as Pulitzer  Prize-winning historian Eric Foner; author, journalist and MacArthur  Fellow Ta-Nehisi Coates; New Yorker staff writer Rachel Aviv; and author  and critic Vivian Gornick.

In addition to five editorial intern positions, one position is dedicated to a business internship,  focused entirely on the publishing process including digital marketing,  communications, fundraising, advertising, sales, budget management, and  institutional accountability. The internship is full-time, five days a  week. (Interns work 35 hours per week.) Interns are paid $20 per hour,  $700 per week.

Over the years, this prestigious program has produced critical  editorial leadership in newsrooms across the country and graduated  award-winning journalists whose work has influenced and informed  millions at virtually every significant media outlet in the U.S.,  including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, The New Yorker, the Los Angeles Times, and the Wall Street Journal, as well as CNN, MSNBC, and NPR.
