Set in a Midwest suburb, Chinese American fifth grader Liam Zhang prepares for a spelling bee after striking a deal with his mom to save his head of messy long hair from a haircut. However, Liam also juggles other concerns: pursuing a new girl at school that he has a crush on, taking care of his hamster Creeper, spending time with his best friends Conor and Daniel, and navigating the loss of a friend for the first time.
