Join us in screening Quiz Lady as part of the annual Women Take The Reel Film Festival. The film will be followed by a conversation with director and Academy Award winner Jessica Yu moderated by Tufts Professor of the Practice Jennifer Burton, which will explore topics including Asian American representation on television/film and current challenges for women and POC in media.
This event is free and open to the community. Parking is available at Dowling Hall, 419 Boston Ave, which is a 5-minute walk from Barnum Hall.
About the Film In Quiz Lady, a brilliant but tightly wound, gameshow-obsessed young woman, Anne (Awkwafina), and her estranged, train-wreck of a sister Jenny (Sandra Oh), must work together to help cover their mother's gambling debts. When Anne's beloved dog is kidnapped, they set out on a wild, cross-country trek to get the cash the only way they know how: by turning Anne into a bona-fide gameshow champion.
Directed by Academy Jessica Yu, English, 1 hour and 39 minutes, USA, 2023 Quiz Lady premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2023, and was released by 20th Century Studios via Hulu in the United States on November 3, 2023.
About the Women Take the Reel Film Festival. This annual film festival is a collaborative effort among Women's and Gender Studies departments involved in the Consortium for Graduate Studies in Gender, Culture, Women, and Sexuality (as well as select institutions/universities aligned with its mission) that features films about issues relating to gender, race, sexuality, class and/or feminism.
The focus is on the intellectual investigation of these issues, so every film is accompanied by a Q&A and discussion with the film director, producer, local activists and practitioners, and/or faculty members from the host institution for each film.
