Need to Know
New Film and Media Seminar core course. Cross-listed with FMS-0194-01 Storytelling in Film and Television
About the Course
Cross-listed with FMS-0194-01, Storytelling in Film and Television. What is a story? How do films and television shows tell stories and what kinds of stories do they tell? Are audio-visual and verbal storytelling the same--for example, do films and TV shows, like novels, have narrators, point-of-view, and single authors? And are there significant differences between storytelling in film and television? For example, how does storytelling change when stories are told across episodes, seasons, and years, and how does the "temporal prolongation" of television affect our relation to character? These are some of the major theoretical questions we will be addressing in this comprehensive survey of narrative and narration in television and film. One required screening per week.
