This course will examine Japanese cinema, providing a survey on its development across history, starting with important films from major foundational filmmakers of both pre- and post-World War II, progressing through the decades to study innovative films made by contemporary Japanese directors today. Particular attention will also be paid to the development of major cinematic genres heavily associated with Japan. Taught in English.
